WHAT ROBOT LAWN MOWERS CAN DO?
Robot Lawn Mowers are safe, eco-friendly, and fully autonomous. They only require a perimeter wire installation around all the areas to be mowed. Once the installation is finalized, your robot mower will be scheduled to mow and return home to recharge by itself with no input from you at all.
Depending on your lawn size and robot choice, your robot will head off either every day or every 2 or 3 days to randomly mow all of your lawn surfaces and leave you with a perfect lawn 365 days a year.
Robot Lawn Mowers will change your view on lawn mowing forever.

WHY ROBOT LAWN MOWERS NEED A BOUNDARY WIRE?
The perimeter or boundary wire function is to communicate to the robot mower where your lawn boundaries are. The charging station emits a signal through the boundary wire, so when the robot mower approaches the boundary, it stops and goes back the other way. Moreover, when the robot is low in battery, it will first find the boundary wire and then follow it to return to the charging station.
*When installing the boundary wire keep in mind to leave enough room for the robot to pass over it, as the wire has to be centered to the robot.
HOW TO INSTALL A BOUNDARY WIRE FOR ROBOT MOWERS
Bury or peg the perimeter wire?
There are two options for the installation of the perimeter wire around the edges of your lawn. One option is to peg the boundary wire to the grass. The second option is to bury the wire approximately 5cm deep, by cutting a small slit in the ground. If possible, we recommend initially pegging the wire down to ensure that the robot lawn mower is running flawlessly over the space for a few days or a week. Then, bury it if you wish to bury the perimeter wire.
WHY?
Pegging the perimeter wire down is a quicker option (and fine to leave installed this way), however, if your grass is thick or the wire is not pegged down low and tight, the boundary wire might be high enough that it can be caught by the blades of the robot lawnmower (cutting or damaging it). Also, the wheels of the robot mower can snag the wire and lift it.
On the other hand, during the first few weeks of the robot mower operation, adjustments on the boundary wire position sometimes are needed to increase the mowing efficiency on the edges of your lawn. (OR to get the mower to cut as close as possible to the edges.)
Thus, we first recommend you peg the wire, adjust it if necessary, and then if desired, bury the boundary wire. See more about boundary wire installation here.

CAN ONE ROBOT MOWER DO MULTIPLE LAWNS AND ZONES?
Yes! And there are multiple ways how a robot lawn mower can mow separated lawn areas and separated isolated lawns.
- One Mower with one charging station – Boundary wire is installed in one continuous loop around all Areas. For more information see “Closed and open loops“
- One Mower with multiple charging stations – Separated perimeter wires for each charging station. Some brands of mowers are not compatible with this method.
- Multiple Robotic Lawn Mowers – sometimes the simplest solution is setup multiple small robot mowers instead of trying to get one mower to cover separate areas.

DO ROBOT LAWN MOWERS CUT TO THE EDGES?
All robot lawn mowers will cut close to the lawn edges. However, some robot models will cut nearer the edge than other robot mower models.
Mowers with the blade system in the centre will cut further away than models with offset blade systems. Offset blades allow the robot mower to travel with one wheel on a path or paved area reaching the lawn edges.
Where the mower is cutting up to a hard surface like a raised garden or fence or side of your house then the uncut edge distance will range from 5 to 15cm.
Typically Robot Mowers that have blade systems in the center will cut between 6-10cm from the edge of the machine. Once you allow for some space for the mower to avoid the hard edge you will get these mowers to cut between 8 and 15cm from the edges.
Mowers that have offset blade systems will cut around 3-5cm from the edge of the machine so you will get these units to leave an uncut edge of between 5 and 10cm against a hard surface.

WHAT ARE THE ROBOTIC MOWER CUTTING PATTERNS?
All Robot Mowers operate in a similar way of cutting your lawn. There are different cutting patterns and some robotic mowers use multiple or all three methods below:
Straight Cut – The robot mower will mow in a straight line until it hits an obstacle or boundary wire, then turn to a different direction and continue with the pattern.
Spiral Cut – If the mower sense that the grass is thick or long, It will start the spiral cutting pattern as shown in the adjacent picture.
GPS Assist – The robot mower will create a virtual map of the area and break it up into small squares. This feature lets the robot know which areas have been mowed and which need to be mowed, as well as where they left off in the last mowing session. Additionally, some robot mowers use the information to start the spiral cut method in the centre of each small square.
HOW OFTEN AND FOR HOW LONG DO THE ROBOTIC MOWERS MOW?
Robot Lawnmowers will mow your garden based on the settings programmed, as you can set up the days and the times required. If it’s raining during a defined mowing time, the robot can be set to return to the charging station and wait until the next scheduled time to mow. They are designed to mow around 1mm to 5mm of grass at a time, so you need your robot mower to work often.
It is important to note that the time for a robotic mower to mow a lawn will vary, as it depends on many factors such as the robot model, type of grass, slopes, battery, size of the garden, etc. The robot does not require human supervision or intervention to do its job, so it can be scheduled to work as many hours as it is required, at any time, day or night, and on any combination of days of the week. The idea is to program the robot to mow at times you would not normally be outside in your yard.

HOW MUCH AREA A ROBOT MOWER CAN MOW?
Robot mowers can cover areas from a range of 20m2 to 20.000m2, depending on the model. You can find how much area your robot can handle in the maximum coverage capacity of every mower. As this will vary on every model, we recommend NOT to exceed the 70% of the rated maximum capacity of the robot mower. If you have slopes or complicated lawn areas it will take longer to mow and will reduce the capacity of the robot further. Example for calculation:
– if you have 700m2 of lawn to mow, we suggest you select a mower that is at least capable of 1000m2.
UNDERSTANDING SLOPE RATINGS | IMPORTANT!
It is IMPORTANT to notice that every robot lawnmower has 3 different slope ratings.
- Maximum Permissible Slope – It determines the highest gradient value that the robot can manage. The highest slope should only be in a small part of your lawn and it should be well inside your perimeter wire.
- Maximum Consistent slope – If most of your lawn is sloped, this should be the maximum slope gradient value of your lawn.
- Maximum edge slope – This is the most important rating, is the maximum slope allowed within 1 meter of your boundary wire.
* These ratings are the maximum allowable ratings on a perfectly manicured lawn surface. So, lawn areas with rough or uneven surfaces, thick or deep grass (>30mm deep when cut) will need to be factored into your maximum slope ratings.
* Our products clearly states all three ratings in our product pages tab named “Additional information”

HOW TO MEASURE SLOPES GRADIENTS?
Most robot lawn mower rating are displayed as % gradient, which are not the same as degrees. You can measure your slopes following this instructions:
- Use a level that is at least 100cm long or a straight stick of some sort and put the your level on top.
- Measure one meter from one end and make a mark on the level.
- Then place one end of the level on the ground and position the other end so that the bubble shows that it is level.
- Then measure from your mark on the level to the ground.
- This measurement will be equal to the gradient in Centimetres. So Xcm is equal to X% gradient.
GRASS TYPES
Thick grasses like newly laid Buffalo and Kikuyu can be difficult for some robot mower to travel on.
If you notice that your lawn is more than 40mm deep when freshly mowed, keep it in mind when choosing a mower. Newly laid or grown grass are usually deeper than older established grass.
If your lawn is under 40mm in height when freshly mowed, then most robot mowers will be able to travel on them easily.

IS CONNECTIVITY IMPORTANT IN YOUR ROBOT MOWER?
The simple answer is “It’s not.” Once your Robot Mower is set up for your area or areas you do not need to be connected to your mower very often. Here is the different types of connectivity you will find and the benefits of each:
Bluetooth Connectivity – With this connection you will be able to set most if not all function of the mower through a usually intuitive free App. (within a Bluetooth range).
Standalone Wi-Fi – You can communicate to your robot mower through its wi-fi. (You will need to disconnect from any wi-fi you are connected to previously).
Integrated Wi-Fi – This feature allows you to communicate and set up your robot mower from anywhere in the world using your home wi-fi. You will also get updates from the robot regarding its current status.
GPS and 3G/4G – This enables the robot to have its own mobile network connection and satellite positioning. Thus, this let you have remote access and let you track your robot mowers positioning. This connection does come with a small cost of renewing the mobile data plan.
HOW THE ROBOTIC MOWER WILL CHANGE YOUR LAWN?
Due to the way robot lawn mowers are designed to work, your lawn will be much greener and healthier, with fewer weeds, and will look neatly cut all the time.
Cutting a small amount frequently means that the fine clippings are mulched finely into your soil. Consequently, less watering is required, clippings help fertilize your lawn and promote healthier and thicker lawns. This turn results in fewer weeds as well.
One of the greatest advantages of robotic mowers is that your lawn is 100% perfectly mowed 365 days a year.
